Honey has been prized for centuries not just for its taste but for its healing properties. This sweet gold is regarded as the only edible material that doesn’t break down or expire; incorporating it to other food products prolongs their shelf life. Honey even goes beyond its status as another form of sustenance because it is valued medicinally for its healing properties. Why not channel these benefits to your skin? The recipe below is taken from the formulary of Dave Cushman (http://www.dave-cushman.net/bee/newhome.html), an English bee keeper.
Aside from beeswax and the aforementioned honey, other natural ingredients are included to nourish the skin. Lanolin is a yellow waxy substance secreted by the oil glands of wool producing animals like sheep. This wax is a potent emollient and moisturizer that protects skin against harsh elements.
Glycerin is also added to enhance the moisturizing benefits of this lotion.
Ingredients:
16 grams beeswax
64 milliliters food grade mineral oil
20 grams honey
20 grams lanolin
30 milliliters glycerin, USP
15 grams soap flakes
5 drops of lemon juice
Method:
Melt beeswax, lanolin, and mineral oil together at approximately 70°C in one water bath. In another bath, mix honey, soap flakes, and glycerin at approximately 39°C. Allow to cool the wax-and-oil mixture to 39°C before combining it to the honey mixture. Mix well while intermittently adding the lemon juice. Whisk further until smooth. Pour into jars and enjoy!
